I was having dinner at a restaurant when a guy walked up, smiling like we shared years of history. “Hey man! Long time no see!” he said. I had absolutely no idea who he was.
He kept talking like we were old friends, bringing up memories, places, and inside jokes that meant nothing to me. I awkwardly played along, trying to figure out how I knew him while slowly feeling more unsettled.
Finally, he mentioned something about our college days in California. I stopped cold—I’ve never lived in California.
He ended up telling me that he had mistaken me for his old college roommate—who had the same name as me, looked almost identical, and had moved to my city recently.
He even showed me pictures, and the resemblance was so exact it felt like staring at someone living a life I was never meant to see.
