**Should You Point Silverware Up or Down in the Dishwasher? 3 Experts Weigh In**
### 1. **The “Point Down” Argument: Safety First**
While it might seem intuitive to place your silverware with the sharp end facing up, dishwasher safety experts say pointing the silverware down is actually the safest option. “Placing knives with the blade facing up can result in accidental injuries when unloading,” says Susan Hargreaves, a safety expert and home appliance consultant. “Sharp utensils are a safety hazard, especially if you’re unloading the dishwasher in a hurry and aren’t paying close attention.”
Pointing silverware down also reduces the risk of potential cuts when you’re cleaning your silverware by hand. It’s easier to avoid sharp edges when unloading forks, knives, and spoons if they’re facing downward.
### 2. **The “Point Up” Defense: Cleanliness and Efficiency**
On the other hand, some experts believe silverware should be loaded with the eating ends facing upward. “The primary goal is to ensure that each piece of silverware gets thoroughly cleaned and sanitized,” says James Willis, a kitchen appliance engineer. “When silverware is pointed up, the water jets in the dishwasher have better access to the eating surfaces, ensuring a more thorough cleaning process.”
Additionally, pointing forks and spoons up might prevent them from nesting together. “If silverware is placed pointing down, they can often clump together, preventing the water and detergent from reaching all the surfaces. This can lead to unsatisfactory cleaning results,” Willis explains.
