We often think that painful or swollen feet are simply the result of a busy day or ill-fitting shoes. But did you know they can also reflect a deeper imbalance? The liver, that discreet but vital organ, sometimes sends signals we ignore. And these clues… often come through our feet. Surprising? Read on; this might enlighten you.

  1. Swollen feet with no apparent cause: it’s not always fatigue:

If your ankles or feet remain swollen  without injury or prolonged standing , it may signal  liver dysfunction . When the liver slows down, it can disrupt the distribution of fluids in the body,  causing fluid retention in the extremities . This is a symptom that should not be ignored.

  1. Persistent itching under the feet:

Constant itching  , especially at night? This may indicate  a buildup of waste in the body that the liver is struggling to eliminate . These substances can irritate the skin,  causing unpleasant, even intense, sensations .

  1. Appearance of bruises without shock:

Do you notice bruises on your feet  without remembering a blow or a false move  ? This could indicate  a clotting disorder , because  the liver produces the proteins needed for proper blood clotting .

  1. Unusual redness of the soles of the feet:

An abnormally red, almost bright ,  sole of the foot  may reflect a chronic liver disorder . This symptom, similar to palmar erythema, can also be observed  on the feet in cases of hormonal imbalances linked to the liver .

  1. Ridged or deformed nails: a sign not to be ignored:

White horizontal streaks ,  curved or rounded nails like an upturned glass? These abnormalities can  reveal an overloaded liver , struggling to perform its essential functions.

    1. Burning sensation at the end of the day:

Unpleasantly hot feet, especially at night while resting? This could be  a sign of peripheral nerve damage , sometimes linked to liver problems.  This is called peripheral neuropathy.

    1. Dry skin and cracked heels:

Rough skin,  cracked heels , persistent dryness? These signs can indicate  incomplete elimination of toxins by the liver , which impacts the quality of the skin, including that of the feet.

A  slight yellow tint  on the soles of the feet or nails may reflect  a buildup of bile pigments . This often occurs when  the liver is no longer able to properly excrete them .

    1. Visible veins on the tops of the feet:

Protruding veins, especially at the back of the foot? This can signal  excessive pressure in the blood vessels , sometimes linked to  portal hypertension, a consequence of liver disorders.

Our feet speak to us… it’s up to us to know how to listen to them:

They are sometimes the first signs of a deeper imbalance.  A malfunctioning liver doesn’t always manifest itself through abdominal pain or nausea: it can also be felt in the extremities. Paying attention to these signs can help  detect certain health problems earlier.

Another important factor is “fluid retention (edema),” which can develop when the heart, kidneys, or liver are not working properly. High salt intake can worsen the condition by increasing water retention. Certain medications for blood pressure, pain, or inflammation may also contribute to swelling, particularly when multiple drugs are used.

Reduced physical activity also plays a role. Movement helps circulate blood and lymph fluid, while inactivity allows fluid to collect in the lower limbs. Even light daily exercise such as walking or gentle leg movements can noticeably improve circulation and reduce swelling.

In some cases, swelling may signal more serious conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), especially if it appears suddenly or affects only one leg and requires urgent attention. Common management includes elevating the legs, using compression stockings, staying active, and reducing salt intake, but persistent or painful swelling should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
