The Thursdays I Couldn’t Explain
For three months, my wife had been leaving the house every Thursday night at exactly 8:30.
At first, I told myself it was nothing.
People need privacy. People have friends. Marriage doesn’t mean you have to know every place your spouse goes.
But then I started noticing the little things.
She stopped leaving her phone on the kitchen counter. She changed her password. And whenever I asked where she was going, she gave me the same answer.
“Just somewhere I need to be.”
That answer bothered me more than if she’d simply said she was meeting someone.
One Thursday, I finally asked her directly.
“Are you seeing someone?”
She froze.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Then she looked at me and said, “Why would you ask me something like that?”
“Because you disappear every Thursday night.”
Her expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
That was when something inside me sank.
I had spent twenty years believing I knew my wife better than anyone.
Suddenly, I wasn’t sure I knew her at all.
That night, I decided I would follow her.
I hated myself for even thinking about it. I had always believed that if you couldn’t trust your wife, you had a bigger problem than whatever she might be hiding.
But when her car pulled away from our house at 8:30, I grabbed my jacket and followed.
She drove farther than I expected.
Past the restaurants and shopping centers.
Past the neighborhood where we’d lived for years.
Eventually, she turned onto a narrow road surrounded by old houses.
Then she stopped in front of one that looked abandoned.
I parked several houses away and watched.
My wife got out.
She looked around as if she was making sure nobody had followed her.
Then she walked toward the house.
My heart started pounding.
I was certain I was about to discover another man.
Instead, she disappeared through the front door.
I waited five minutes.
Then ten.
Finally, I got out of my car.
I walked toward the house, trying to convince myself to turn around.
But then I heard something from inside.
A loud bang.
Then a man’s voice.
And my wife’s voice immediately afterward.
“Please! You can’t do this!”
I stopped breathing.
I moved closer to the window.
And what I saw inside made me reach for the door handle.
I had followed my wife because I thought she was cheating on me.
I had no idea I was about to discover why she had been lying to me every Thursday night.
