“I know about your mother’s trust.”

My blood cooled.

He saw it.

And there, in that tiny reaction, he found oxygen.

The elevator dinged.

Doors opened.

He stepped out first, then turned.

“Ask Nora,” he said.

The doors closed between us.

I stood alone in the elevator as it descended to the parking garage.

My mother’s trust.

I did ask Nora.
