She turned toward me, eyes bright with rage.

“You’re letting her erase me,” she said.

The judge warned her to be silent.

But I had already heard enough.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited. Not many, but enough. My mother had made sure people knew there was a family dispute. She expected sympathy.
