Dad looked from Clayton to Dennis to Jackie, then back to me. “What’s going on?”

Clayton stood.

“Patricia. Daniel.”

My mother clutched her purse strap. “Clayton Hughes. It’s been a long time.”

“Yes,” he said. “It has.”

Dad forced a laugh. “Is this about the trust paperwork? We were going to explain.”
