Everyone at my daughter’s school thought I was just a quiet single father. That illusion ended when I found my eight-year-old locked in a dark equipment room—and the staff threatened to ruin her future if I spoke out. They had no idea who they were dealing with.

Part 7: The Daughter Before Me

Claire’s letter explained that years before our Lily was born, another child had used the name Lily Carter because her real identity needed protection.

Claire had helped the girl’s mother leave a dangerous situation. Westbridge and the Seven Branches Society had promised confidentiality, then continued using the false identity to claim money long after the girl was gone.

When our Lily was born, someone connected the records.

Claire tried to correct it quietly.

She failed.

The letter ended with one instruction:

Find the girl in the photograph. She knows why our daughter was chosen.

Before I could fully process it, Rachel arrived with Lily. Lily had found an address hidden inside the library book. It was dated for tomorrow and said:

Bring Lily. She deserves her real name.

Rachel then recognized the woman in the photo.

Her name was Evelyn.

She was Claire’s aunt, believed to have died when Claire was young.

I thought the little girl must be Claire’s cousin.

Thomas said, “No.”

Then he gave me another photograph.

It showed Claire holding the same little girl in her arms.

On the back, someone had written:

Claire and her daughter, Lily.

I could not breathe.

Before Claire married me, she had a child.

The mystery was no longer just a corrupt school, forged records, or stolen scholarship money.
