My Mother

mother did something so fast my mind refused to understand it.

She reached down.

Her fingers hooked around the elastic strap near Lily’s cheek.

And she pulled.

The oxygen mask came away from my daughter’s face.

For one impossible second, the room stopped being real.

Lily’s mouth opened.

Her eyes flew wide.

The machine hissed uselessly into open air.
