My Mother

a monster.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred.

Daniel took the phone gently from my hand.

“She doesn’t get to be in this room anymore,” he said.

“She’s my mother,” I whispered.

He looked exhausted, heartbroken, and absolutely certain.

“She’s Lily’s danger.”

That sentence split something open in me.

Not because it was harsh.

Because it was true.
