My Mother

plea deal. My mother avoided prison, but she did not avoid consequences. Probation. Mandatory counseling. Community service. No contact. A permanent record.

She hated that most of all.

Not the counseling. Not the service.

The record.

The fact that somewhere official, outside her control, the truth had been written down.

I thought that would satisfy me.
