for the flights. I had paid for the rental house in Maui. I had paid for the airport transfers, the rental SUV, the luau package, the snorkeling trip for my niece and nephew, and the “sunset family portrait session” my mother had insisted would be “such a beautiful memory.”

And they had gone without me.
