My Son Begged Me Not to Open His Bedroom Door—But I Opened It Anyway

 The Secret My Family Buried

Emily placed a small envelope on the bed.

My hands were shaking as I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

All written by my sister.

Linda had written about a secret relationship.

About a child.

About our father discovering the pregnancy.

And about the terrible choice he forced her to make.

I read every word.

Linda had become pregnant when she was nineteen.

The father was a young man our family considered unacceptable.

Our father threatened to disown her.

When Linda refused to give up the baby, he sent her away.

She gave birth to Emily.

But our family was told the baby had died.

Linda never stopped searching for her daughter.

Then, years later, Linda found Emily.

They secretly reunited.

But Linda was afraid.

She believed our father had powerful connections and could take Emily away again.

The letters became darker.

Then came the final one.

It was dated three years before Linda’s death.

It said:

“Michael, if you ever find out about Emily, don’t trust anyone who tells you I died accidentally.”

I stopped reading.

My sister’s death had always been explained as a car accident.

A wet road.

A sharp turn.

A tragic mistake.

But the letter suggested something else.

I looked at Emily.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

She lowered her eyes.

“Because I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“My mother told me that if anything happened to her, I should never contact you.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed someone in the family wanted her gone.”

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“That’s why I found her.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

He told me that six months earlier, while cleaning out the basement, he had discovered an old box belonging to Linda.

Inside were photographs, letters, and a phone number.

Daniel called it.

Emily answered.

They began talking.

At first, Daniel thought she was lying.

Then she sent him photographs.

Documents.

Birth records.

Everything.

Daniel became convinced.

But there was something else.

Something he hadn’t told me.

“Why were you hiding her in your bedroom?”

Daniel looked at Emily.

She nodded.

Then he finally answered.

“Because someone was looking for her.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He showed me several photographs.

A black car parked outside our house.

A man standing across the street.

Another photograph showed the same man following Emily.

“This started three weeks ago,” Daniel said.

I stared at the photographs.

“Why didn’t you call the police?”

Emily whispered:

“Because the man is a police officer.”

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“And that’s not the worst part.”

He opened another photograph.

It showed a man entering an old storage building.

I recognized him immediately.

My cousin, Robert.

The same cousin who had handled Linda’s belongings after her death.

The same cousin who had told me Linda’s death was simply an accident.

The same cousin who had insisted there was nothing suspicious about it.

I felt sick.

“Robert knows about Emily?”

Daniel answered:

“He knows everything.”
