dirty piles along the road. Caleb passed his driver’s test on the second try. He pretended not to care, but when the instructor handed him the paperwork, his smile nearly split his face.

I bought him a keychain shaped like a tiny compass.

“For the car I don’t have?” he asked.

“For wherever you’re going.”
