“I promised to teach you how to repair the engine properly,” Calvin corrected her smoothly. “I never promised to give away the most cherished memory of my entire life.”
Ruby pressed her lips together tightly. Her current boyfriend, Mason, quietly stepped away from her side. Calvin took a slow, deep breath. He was still physically weak, and his legs trembled slightly from standing so long, but he refused to sit down.
“There is something else you both need to understand,” Calvin declared to the crowd. “I do not have terminal cancer. The physical mass was merely an abscess caused by a severe bacterial infection. The medical treatment worked completely, and I do not plan on dying anytime soon.”
A sudden murmur of surprise rippled through the gathered crowd. Amber’s immediate reaction was not relief at all. Her eyes widened in pure panic, resembling someone who had just discovered that the person she had buried in her imagination was very much alive and fully aware of her schemes.
“What exactly did you do?” she demanded through clenched teeth. “What did you arrange behind my back?”
“I protected everything I built long before I ever met you,” Calvin answered simply.
Paula placed a thick manila folder directly onto the main coffee table.
“All previous powers of attorney have been legally revoked,” Paula announced. “The corporate bank accounts now operate under strict new restrictions. Mr. Calvin Buffington has formally signed a legal separation of assets and a revised last will, all fully certified by a licensed notary and backed by official medical capacity assessments.”
“That agreement is entirely worthless!” Amber shouted bitterly. “He was extremely sick when he signed it!”
Dr. Gable, who was invited by Calvin to attend the gathering as an official witness, spoke up from the back of the room.
“Mr. Buffington was fully oriented, completely conscious, and entirely capable of making sound legal decisions,” Dr. Gable stated clearly. “I personally recorded these precise findings in his official medical file, and he was thoroughly evaluated by two independent specialists.”
Amber looked frantically around the room searching for support, but no one stepped forward to take her side. Calvin pointed toward several senior men and women who had worked alongside him since the earliest days of the business.
