PART 2 — Benny Came Back Every Thursday 🐾💛
After that first visit, something changed.
Lily still hated chemotherapy days.
She still hated the needles, the medicine, and the long hours sitting beneath the bright hospital lights.
But now she had something to look forward to.
Benny came back every Thursday.
The moment Lily saw his little blue therapy vest appear in the doorway, her whole face would change.
Sometimes she was too tired to smile.
Sometimes she was nauseous.
Sometimes she would barely speak.
But Benny always seemed to know exactly what she needed.
He would climb carefully into her lap and settle against her blanket.
When Lily felt sick, he rested his chin beside her.
When she was scared, she held his paw.
And when the medicine began flowing through her IV, Benny would make that same soft humming sound against her chest.
It became their special routine.
Lily even started counting his toes whenever she felt afraid.
“One… two… three… four…”
Benny would remain perfectly still as she counted.
Then she would start again.
Sometimes she counted all the way to twenty.
Sometimes she lost count because she was laughing.
And sometimes, when the treatment became too painful, she simply held him and cried.
Benny never moved away.
One Thursday, Lily looked at him and asked, “Benny, do you ever get scared?”
Benny simply lifted his head and looked at her.
Lily smiled faintly.
“I get scared all the time.”
I was sitting beside her, trying not to cry.
Then Lily placed both hands around Benny’s face.
“But you’re brave.”
Grace, his handler, smiled from across the room.
I remember thinking how strange life could be.
My daughter was fighting a disease she didn’t understand, and somehow a little dog seemed to understand her better than most adults did.
Week after week, Benny came.
He became familiar to the nurses.
He became familiar to the doctors.
And eventually, he became familiar to every child on that floor.
But there was something none of us knew.
That little limp in Benny’s back leg wasn’t simply part of getting older.
The faint scar near his paw wasn’t the only thing Grace had been hiding.
Benny was fighting something too.
And while he was helping Lily fight her battle…
he was quietly fighting one of his own.
Then came the day Lily finally reached the end of her treatment.
The day we had dreamed about for months.
The day she would ring the hospital bell.
Everyone was ready to celebrate.
There were balloons.
There were nurses smiling.
There was a camera waiting.
And Lily stood beside the bell with her hand wrapped around the braided rope.
But when she looked around the hallway, she noticed something immediately.
Something was missing.
Benny wasn’t there.
