“I’m glad you’re here.”
Love,
Margaret
Emily pressed the letter against her chest.
Then she noticed something.
There was one more line written at the bottom.
And sweetheart…
Please don’t let that second plate stay empty.
Emily began to cry.
She sat down at the kitchen table.
For a long time, she stared at the empty chair.
Then she picked up the second plate.
She carried it to the cupboard.
And she put it away.
The next morning, Emily made breakfast.
Two eggs.
Two pieces of toast.
Two cups of coffee.
And she placed two plates on the table.
Because some people leave this world…
but the love they gave us stays behind.
Sometimes, it stays in an old recipe.
Sometimes, in a handwritten letter.
Sometimes, in the sound of a familiar laugh.
And sometimes…
it stays in the empty chair across from us.
Waiting to remind us that we were loved.
