I got up from my chair.
“What happened?”
Emily stared at me silently for several seconds.
Then she whispered:
“I heard Mrs. Lauren speaking to someone.”
“Who?”
She gave me a name I knew very well.
“Brian.”
My blood ran cold.
Lauren had always introduced Brian as a distant cousin.
He came to our house often.
Sometimes he helped with paperwork. Other times, he drove Lauren somewhere.
I had never questioned it.
Why would I?
He was family—or at least, that was what I had been told.
Emily explained that she had been cleaning the hallway when she heard their voices coming from the room next to her.
They believed she had already gone home.
At first, she couldn’t make out everything they were saying.
Then she heard my name.
Lauren was talking about my will.
She said I still had not signed the revised version.
Brian sounded angry.
He told her she had already waited far too long.
Then Lauren said something that Emily could never forget.
“Once everything is in my name, George won’t be a problem anymore.”
I froze.
For months, Lauren really had been bringing up my will repeatedly.
She had also recently started managing my heart medication herself.
At the time, I had thought she was simply trying to help me.
But suddenly, memories began connecting in my mind.
Two weeks earlier, the brakes on my car had failed.
I had assumed it was an unfortunate mechanical problem.
Now I wasn’t so sure.
Emily lowered her eyes.
“Mr. George, I desperately need this job. I still haven’t saved enough money for my mother’s surgery.”
She paused.
“But if I kept quiet and something happened to you, I could never forgive myself.”
I stared at the young woman standing in front of me.
Lauren humiliated her almost every day.
She mocked her weight.
She criticized her clothes.
She reminded Emily that she desperately needed the money.
And yet Emily was putting the job she desperately needed at risk simply because she was worried about me.
That night, I barely slept.
For the first time, I began looking at my own home differently.
The rooms didn’t feel safe anymore.
The woman sleeping upstairs didn’t feel like the woman I thought I had married.
And the next morning, I made a decision.
I called my attorney.
His name was Robert.
I didn’t tell him everything over the phone.
I simply said:
“Robert, I need you to come over. And I need you to come quietly.”
Within a few days, what we discovered was even worse than I had imagined.
Because Brian wasn’t Lauren’s cousin.
Not even close.
And once Robert uncovered the truth about their relationship, the entire story of my marriage began to fall apart.
