The truth about Brian was the first shock.
The second was what Robert found when he examined my financial records.
Brian was not Lauren’s cousin.
He had been her romantic partner long before she ever met me.
For months, the two of them had apparently been working together while I remained completely unaware of what was happening under my own roof.
Then Robert showed me the bank records.
During the previous year, Lauren had transferred more than one hundred thousand dollars from my accounts into several other accounts.
I stared at the documents in disbelief.
I had trusted her with everything.
My home.
My finances.
My health.
My future.
And she had been quietly preparing for a life in which I was no longer part of the picture.
But the financial transfers weren’t the only problem.
Robert also discovered documents designed to give Lauren extensive control over my finances and medical decisions.
Suddenly, all those conversations about my will made sense.
All those questions about my accounts.
All those times she insisted on handling my medication.
Even the strange incident with my car.
Things I had once dismissed as coincidences now looked completely different.
I felt sick.
Not because I was afraid of losing money.
Money could be replaced.
What hurt was realizing that the person I had trusted had apparently been planning around my absence while pretending to build a life with me.
I called my children immediately.
Sarah arrived first.
When I opened the door, she didn’t ask questions.
She simply hugged me.
“Dad,” she whispered, “I only wanted you to be safe.”
Those words broke something inside me.
For months, I had pushed away the people who truly loved me.
I had defended Lauren.
I had told my children they were being unfair.
I had convinced myself they were simply jealous or unwilling to accept that I had found happiness again.
But now I understood.
They had seen something I refused to see.
My son, Mike, arrived soon afterward.
My attorney was there too.
And then there was Emily.
The young woman who had risked the only income she had to warn me.
That evening, we waited.
We knew Lauren would eventually come home.
And when she did, she walked through the front door expecting an ordinary evening.
Instead, she stepped into the living room and saw Sarah, Mike, Robert, Emily, and me sitting together.
Her expression changed instantly.
She looked from one face to another.
Then her eyes stopped on Emily.
Her voice was cold.
“You told him?”
Emily went pale.
For a moment, I wondered if she would lower her eyes the way she always did.
But this time, she didn’t.
She looked directly at Lauren.
“Yes.”
Lauren laughed.
Then she said something that revealed exactly how little she thought of the woman who had just saved my life.
“You think he’s going to believe you? You’re just a housekeeper.”
I slowly stood up.
And for the first time since I had married Lauren, I wasn’t afraid of her reaction.
I reached for my wedding ring.
Then I placed it on the table.
“Not anymore.”
