PART 1 — THE DAY THEY MET
James was a young Black man working hard to build a better life for himself. Margaret was a young white woman who had recently moved to the city to start a new chapter of her own.
They met on an ordinary afternoon.
Margaret was sitting alone in a small café when she accidentally knocked her coffee onto the table. James, sitting nearby, noticed what happened and immediately offered her some napkins.
She laughed.
He laughed too.
It was such a small moment that neither of them could have imagined where it would eventually lead.
They started talking. Then they talked again the next day.
Soon, those conversations became walks, dinners, phone calls, and long evenings spent telling each other about their childhoods, their dreams, and the lives they hoped to build.
James loved Margaret’s kindness. Margaret loved James’s sense of humor and the way he always made her feel safe.
But when they realized their friendship was becoming something deeper, they also realized that loving each other would not be easy.
Because not everyone around them believed their love should exist.
