PART 4 — THE BENCH

They were sitting together on a bench in the park.

James looked at Margaret and noticed the same smile he had first seen all those years ago.

He started laughing.

Margaret asked him what was so funny.

James told her he was thinking about their first meeting—and how strange it was that two people who had met by accident had somehow spent more than five decades together.

Margaret smiled.

She reached for his hand.

They started talking about everything they had survived.

The difficult years.

The people who doubted them.

The arguments.

The celebrations.

The people they had lost along the way.

And the memories they had created together.

Then Margaret looked at James and said something that made him smile.

“You know what? I’d choose you all over again.”

James squeezed her hand.

“I’d choose you too.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

They simply sat there together, laughing beneath the afternoon sun.

But there was one thing neither of them knew yet.

That day would become one of the most precious memories of their entire lives.
